Saturday October 14 (Texas Renaissance Fair) & Sunday October 15 (Montgomery)

Saturday
I only managed about 4 hours sleep but was up in plenty of time to leave for the Texas Renaissance  Fair in Conroe about half an hour north of Montgomery.

We arrived by 10.30 am and found a park not too far out, the Fair was not over crowded but there were certainly a lot of people around. This is one of the biggest fairs of this type in the US.

It was fascinating wandering round, there were many bars and eating places offering a wide variety of wares, including many selling turkey legs. There was food from many countries, especially from Europe and there was also an English influence of course.

There were many areas where different types of entertainment was scheduled and these mostly lasted half an hour. There were many shops displaying different arts as well as demonstrations of some.

There was a lovely atmosphere and lots of families were present.

All of the people involved with the fair were dressed appropriately and, as it was Pirate Theme day, many of them and the visitors were dressed in some sort of pirate gear.

While some people do come in from out if state, there are many locals who have a regular job during the week.

We wandered round the fair and reached the area where the Birds of Prey flying would take place.

Alternating with them was a guy who demonstrated his talent with whips so we sat and watched him perform before the next Birds of Prey show. His show was called Fire Whip and we saw why at the end of the show.

The strain on his shoulders to work the different whips must have been immense and I did ask about this after the show.

His wife explained that he has been doing this since he was 9 years old and he practices at least an hour every day. They also work out every day. They have travelled overseas and one of his tricks comes from Australia.

He had several different whips, including two different pairs but the very long bull whip was incredible, especially when his wife held some roses once by one and he used the whip to cut them in half!

He demonstrated the power of this whip by cutting a full can of Pepsi in half! The final whip was the fire whip and he even used it to remove the remains of the Pepsi can from the top of his head!!

We then waited for the Birds of Prey to begin. i have to say that it was very hot sitting watching these shows, according to the weather app it was 90 F but felt like 108, a tad warm for me, lol!!

We saw a number of different birds including two owls, one was an Eagle Owl, that did not fly as well as an immature Turkey Vulture that also did not fly but was very active on the ground. We saw two other vultures, a King Vulture that has a beautiful orange head, it had a huge wing span when it flew and a white Backed Vulture. There were two other birds, a Red Tailed Hawk and a Lanner Falcon that just would not leave his pen, finally he did and was an extremely fast flier! We went and saw some of the birds close up after the display, I was with the Red Tailed Hawk..

After this, I needed something really cold so bought an orange shaved ice drink, it sure hit the spot and lasted a long time, lol! We continued to wander round and finally reached the exit. I was certainly ready to leave, mostly due to the heat. Back home and I had a cup of tea as I lay down for a while, I did drop off for a couple of short naps, lol. Most of my clothes were quite wet, including my cap, so that was washed and the rest will get the same treatment tomorrow.

I had a lovely shower and it was great to put clean clothes on, lol! We had another lovely tea and, after a long chat with MJ, I wrote most of the blog before going to bed.

Sunday
Today we had a quiet day, MJ's back was not so good, probably with all the walking we did yesterday so I said I was quite happy to stay at home, finish the blog and do my washing.
