Tuesday September 6 (Ayden to Pigeon Forge)

Another car drama today, lol! Sarah's car would not start but nothing serious, she had drained the battery by leaving a door slightly ajar!! Poor Terri was running round trying to get all her stuff done and giving Sarah instructions re the animals and then Steve texted to say he was leaving work early so we could get on the road earlier.

The weather was gorgeous, clear blue skies and very warm and we finally hit the road about 12.45 pm! We stopped near Farmville at a takeaway place, Little Rocket. It had a great selection and it was nice and cheap. They serve home made foods and it is very popular, lots of people there when we arrived and more pulled up while we were waiting.

At some point after this Steve decided to refer to me as his "Mail order bride", he has a sense of humour that you have to understand, lol! It became quite the thing when he introduced me to people!!

We made quite good time and just before Raleigh we stopped at a Sheetz garage for gas and a comfort stop. We continued along our merry way and around 4 pm I found a Starbucks just off the interstate at Burlington. We all had a coffee before continuing onward until we stopped for a comfort stop at a wonderful rest area. It was a good thing that we stopped as just further along the road not far from Hickory we came up behind a lot of heavy traffic backed up. I opened up my Waze app to find there was an accident about 3 miles ahead!

We went past the accident spot where one car was off to the left on the grass, it had a hefty dent on the rear and there was a lot of glass on the road. The traffic cleared quickly and we sped along the highway. We crossed the state line so I can now cross another state off my list, lol. As dusk was falling and we were in the foothills we stopped at a viewing area to take some photos of the beautiful scenery. We drove over the Pigeon River three times on our route.

As we came down from the mountains we entered an area that I can only guess was reflective of times long gone. There were lots of cabins as well as small stores/bars and so many coloured lights and signs.

We finally arrived just after 9 pm, tired but happy. We checked in then went out to eat but the local places were shut so Steve got the car ad we eventually ate at Joe's Crab Shack, I had the crab cakes.

The main drag that runs from Sevierville through Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg, is very commercialised. It is called "The Strip" and in some ways resembles Las Vegas. There are bright lights all the way, lots of hotels, eating places and places of entertainment. The unusual thing is to see lots of chairs alongside the road, this is where people sit, especially early and late in the day to watch the antique cars, hot rods and the like drive along. There are a great variety of these to be seen.

Back at the hotel and it was time to shower and hit the hay!
