Wednesday September 11 - Thursday September 12 (Napier to Okemos, MI)

Wednesday
The weather was sunny and warm in Napier so I washed my towels and they joined my clothes on the outside line.

It was 9/11 in Napier and I was to land in Chicago still on 9/11. A day to remember for all the wrongly reasons, a day none of us will ever forget!

My flight to aucklnd was 35 minutes late, lol, not a good start to my trip but I had plenty of time before my flight to Chicago. Such is life! When we landed in Auckland we could see a large black rain cloud approaching and there was a brisk southerly wind blowing.

I spent a few pleasant hours in the Air NZ lounge at the International terminal waiting for my flight. We took off about 30 minutes late but it should not make a difference to our arrival time in Chicago.

Once in my seat, I was organising myself and could not find one of my socks. I hunted high and low and then told one of the cabin attendants so she went looking for another pack. She then returned and then told me she knew where my sock was, I had thrown the sock over my shoulder, lol! She said I had given her a good laugh! The CA is English and has been in NZ for 16 years, she was originally from York.

John Wick 3 was one of the movies so that was my first choice, A Dog’s Journey was my next choice. I was somewhat disappointed in John Wick, the violence was not unexpected but I felt that there was a very weak storyline. The other film was beautiful, the dogs chosen for each episode were gorgeous and there were some characters amongst them. It was a simple yet enchanting storyline.

It was then time for dinner and I had the salmon, it was excellent. My bed was made up and I settled down but found it hard to sleep. In the end, I managed about two hours sleep although the flight was good with only a few bumps.

As we were waking up and having our beds turned back into seats, we were all given a Berry smoothy, after a while I turned round and happened to notice I had spilled most of mine, what a mess everywhere. One of the Cabin crew was kind enough to clean it up for me!

We landed ten minutes early and I was through passport control and security in good time. O’Hare is well set up for ePassports, there are a huge number of machines for auto processing. It was very warm in Chicago!

I had to wait for the shuttle and it was a further 20 mins before we departed the terminal, the driver nearly left my bags behind, lol! I was last to be dropped off, so had a bit of a tour of Chicago. As we drove north along N Michigan Avenue we could see black clouds and forked lightning behind the water tower. As we drove south towards my drop off, the sky was clear and a nearly full moon could be seen.

I stayed at a hostel which had the cheapest individual room I could find. However, I will never stay there again as it was by the overhead rail tracks so was very noisy. Also, it was not really worth what I paid for it, the external “private” bathroom was actually shared with four or five other rooms!

Thursday
I ordered a taxi to take me to the station and he could not find the place, however, I rang the company and saw the taxi up the road so was able to wave and attract his attention, lol!

I spent a few hours in the lounge waiting for the train, which left on time. After an uneventful journey, apart from a slight issue with brakes as we were nearing Battle Creek lol, shades of my previous journey, the train was only about three minutes late into East Lansing, so just about on time, lol. Rick met me and we drove straight home.
