Tuesday July 11 (Eagles at Seabeck)

Today we visited Seabeck to watch the Eagles at a lovely spot beside Puget Sound and with great views. The weather was pleasantly warm again and the sun shone down making a greta backdrop for seeing the eagles.

When we arrived there were exactly 0 eagles to be seen, lol, although there were a number of Blue Herons around including some youngsters! Blue Herons are so very elegant, both on the ground and in the air.

About 20 minutes later one adult eagle arrived, and soon after that we watched a juvenile (Juvi) fly round and round over the Sound.

Meanwhile, the adult flew down to the shore line and appeared to catch a fish, it was certainly devouring something. At one stage, the adult eagle appeared to have words with a heron, lol.

Another juvenile flew around the area and was showing white splotches in his feathers so it was possibly from the previous year.

Finally, Juvi landed very awkwardly near the adult, suggesting it was probably a parent. It appeared very proud of itself, lol.

Juvi stood around for a long time and then walked away away from the adult, it then tried to fly but made no progress.

Over the course of the next hour and a half we watched Juvi, stand still for a long time, then walk, sometimes with great difficulty and it made four or five attempts to fly.

At one stage it was really a walk/fly, lol!! after viewing the photographs closely it appeared Juvi was having difficulty lifting its feet out of the water/soft mud.

A couple of Herons passed by and one had words with Juvi, then they both attempted to show him how to fly, lol!

During the time we were watching Juvi a second adult had arrived and may have been the other parent.

The adults were both up in the trees, one on the left of us the other on the right of us, and obviously keeping an eye on Juvi and his antics.

We decided, that Juvi might have just made its maiden flight, one of the parents was calling out to it at regular intervals.

All was fine until a stranger eagle flew into the area and it was given its marching orders very smartly, lol!

Later, another stranger adult flew in and appeared to try and attack Juvi, one of the adults was there in a heartbeat and they certainly had words before the stranger flew off!!!!

Juvi continued to stand in one place for ages, then walk a short distance before trying to fly again.

It looked as if it did eat something at one stage, he certainly needed to put more effort into his attempts to fly, lol!

Finally, it managed a flight of about 10 yards and landed on a greener, possibly firmer area, it never rose more than a couple of feet above the ground.

At this point, we then felt we could leave, not that we could have done anything to help Juvi anyway, lol!!

We drove home via a Cosco store and then the drive through Starbucks. I introduced Cheryl to the tasty Almond Croissant that Starbuck serves as we were both a bit peckish. these are usually all sold by afternoon so we were very lucky!
