Saturday April 15 /Sunday April 16 (Chicago to Washington)

Saturday
I slept solidly for about four hours before I woke up quite early, I did manage a couple more before I needed to surface. I popped out to the Starbucks next door and grabbed a coffee and a croissant for breakfast. I took my time and checked out about 12.50. I really appreciated the extra hour I was given to vacate my room! I had managed to read a book while up in the air so handed it in to the desk clerk for their public lounge but she said she would avail herself of it, lol! It was a lovely spring day in Chicago, 78 F, with a bit of a breeze but that is nothing new!

As I wandered up Adams street towards Union Station I started chatting to another senior lady as we waited at some lights. As we started the slight climb towards the bridge the breeze turned in to a strong wind so she helped me pull my suitcase, lol, the wind was that strong! The bridge has been upgraded at the cost of $M33! We made our farewells in the station and I made my way to the new Metropolitan Lounge, it is very nice!

After an hour or so, I went to get some bottles of water for the trip. I asked a lady who was not too far away if she would be around for a while, after the affirmative response I asked if she would keep an eye on my things. When I returned, she came over and we had a long chat. She is off to New Zealand later in the year so I gave her some information. Before, that trip she is going to Scotland and I told her about a few places I had visited that she might like!

Soon it was time to board the train and I had registered for the 7 pm dinner group and it wa not too long after we departed, at 6.40 pm, bang on time, lol! I had the steak, medium, and it was beautifully cooked, lovely and tender and just the right colour.

Sunday
I had some sleep, two spells of about three hours with some awake time in the middle of the night. As we get into DC around 1 pm, breakfast is a leisurely and long running affair so there was no rush. It was a beautiful day and we were on time!!. I had breakfast with two of the same people from last night, a guy and his son travelling on the son's Easter break. They are from Hawaii!

I arrived safely in DC, the train was ten minutes early, WOW!! Then when I got to my hotel, five minutes from Union Station my room was ready so was able to check in early! I walked the short distance to a Walmart to get a few provisions and stopped at the Starbucks for a coffee! The Walmart food area is one of the messiest I have ever come across, not sure if it was because it was Easter but items were out of place and often missing altogether. no-one seemed to be working to tidy things up!

I have been in Washington at this time of the year previously but have never known it to be 86 F (feels like 91)! There are still a very few blossoms around. I spent the rest of the evening in my room and dropped off to sleep for an hour or so. I was feeling a bit rough as the sore throat I woke up with has turned into a really nasty cold/cough. It is years since I have had a cold, hope it goes away soon!! The room was fine but there were no facilities for making a hot drink. I had to go downstairs and ask the desk clerk to go through to the incorporated restaurant and get some out of their hot water, lol! Tomorrow it is a full day's train journey to my first stop, Savannah!
