Sunday April 28 (Home to Bok Tower, Lake Wales)

Sunday

I was up at 7 am and we headed out early to visit the Bok Tower and gardens near Lake Wales. We had time to take a slight detour for me to have a Starbucks coffee and almond croissant for breakfast.

Our route took us past a variety of landscapes and we did pass several herds of cattle once we reached the county of Indian Lakes. We also passed the tip of Lake Kissimmee where I went on a boat ride with MKMouse a couple of years ago.

We arrived just after 10.30 am and were booked in for brunch in their outdoor kitchen at 11 am. As we were early we watched the short video about the tower, Edward Bok, how and when it was built and opened.

The brunch food was good and they also served Mimosa’s, I had a half Mimosa, juice and Prosecco, lol!

We then made our way to the tower. It is famous for the Carrillon of 60 bells and we were treated to a concert at 1 pm. The tower is beautiful made from pink marble plus another stone.

It was built by Edward Bok, a Dutchman, who had a dream of building such a tower and establishing gardens to reflect Florida as well as to have an area for endangered plant species, amongst others. The tower has a sundial on one face and there is a special chart below that will indicate the time.

Ther is a small moat of water around the bsae of the tower and there aer some huge fish living in it. People can buy food to feed them with!

The tower is on a high point and is absolutely magnificent. The gardens are surrounded by acres of citrus orchards. The concert was excellent and the carillonneur was very skilful, he has played about 400 of the 600 around the world.

I took a couple of videos but the second was interrupted by some people, lol! One of the videos is posted at the end, you might recognise the song! Please forgive the rough video technique!

I noticed a gorgeous Rhodesian Ridgeback, my neighbour back home has one, and ended up chatting to the couple. The dog came from Surrey, UK, and they were living in Brighton at the time.

That is only 20 miles from where I was brought up, lol. The guy is from Gloucestershire and his wife is from Florida! The poor dog was attacked by a pit bull but she should recover well. I also chatted to three very pleasant  American ladies abot the tower and other things.

There were some interesting posters about carillons inside the centre, they explain much about them.

We then drove to our hotel just outside Lake Wales for our one night stay.I had a bit of a rest then went downstairs but found my door would not shut from the outside.
The fellow on reception came up with his piece of technology and after about four attempts, it was fixed, lol!

I then decided to have a session in the outdoor pool to exercise my shoulder. I was lucky as the pool was empty although there were a couple of folk using the loungers. The water was about 75 F and was very acceptable.

After exercising for some time I spent some time on a lounger, just as well I had not left it until later as several people arrived to use the pool and one family basically took over!
We went out for tea at a local restaurant, The Sizzling Grill, that was recommended by one of the ladies at the hotel. It was very busy and had several rooms that were all nearly full. We both had the Haddock, it was very tasty.

Then it was back to the hotel and off to my room and bed!!
