Monday August 20 & Tuesday August 21 (Chicago)

Monday
I awoke fairly early, it was very grey outside. I wandered out about 10 am to find breakfast at the Wildberry Pancake House only a couple of blocks away. The bellboy told me if I could not get in to go to a Cuban Sandwich place. When I arrived at the Wildberry I understood what he meant, there are three large spaces downsatirs and one upstairs as well as an outside area, they were all crowded!! This is always a good sign about the food at a place.

I did not have to wait too long and was soon enjoying some crepe with fruit for breakfast, yum! On the way back to my hotel, it started to rain hard so I stayed inside for a few hours. I wandered out about 3.30 pm and found a Starbucks inside Water Tower Place.

I then walked up to Lake Shore Drive, and crossed via the underpass. I walked along the lake side and the water was quite rough, although nowhere near as rough as it can be.

There are two cycle lanes and they were well used. One highlight was when two pairs of poplise four wheel motor bikes came whizzing along in the direction of the Navy Pier, obviously something was going on!!

It started to rain fairly hard so I walked back to my hotel and there was quite a bit of police activity on the road!

Tuesday
Today, I went on the Hop On Hop Off bus, having never done that before.

waited a while as it was raining and headed off down the road to the stop. A bus was already there and I managed to catch it, lol!

It was an interesting tour, with many views of Chicago's skyline.

It started on the Gold Coast, a very expensive area to live! We saw various views of the river, including where it splits into two streams.

The tour went past Soldier Field and into the museum area. There were three statues to polish architects who were important to Chicago including Copernicus.

A point of interest is that Chicago has a large polish population, second only to Warsaw which, of course, is in Poland!

We drove under many of the railway lines that criss cross ghe ity with most of them running above the roads below.

I rode the tour round to the Navy Pier, it was pretty breezy and we had light rain for much of the trip but we were given ponchos to help us, lol!

I was pleased to see the magnificent Buckingham Fountain again!

The weather cleared once I was on the pier and it was so good to see the sun. While I sat outside to drink a coffee and saw the tall ship departing!

I did intend to ride the wheel but it was closed due to the wind. My observation is that it must be closed more than it is open seeing as Chicago dubs itself the Windy City, lol!

I only had to wait 10 minutes for a bus to come around, this was good.

There were three Argentinian males on the bus who were not a good advert. They stood up when there were photo ops making it hard for others and,

On the way back, one sat at the front of the bus and proceeded to have loud conversations with his mates at the back, truly obnoxious, lol!

We were on the Magnificent Mile, not far from my stop, when two police on horses crossed the road and proceeded to amble along the road, lol!

I exited the tour at the Water Tower as the bus was parked up for a while, it was not very far from my hotel.

Tonight it was time to pack and prepare for my flight to Houston tomorrow. I will stay in a hotel overnight and depart for New Zealand on Thursday evening.
